Mark's Weekly Digest - 01/14/2020
If the first two weeks are any indication, it's going to be an interesting year.
Hello friends,
Here we are, fresh into a new decade. So far we’ve faced down a potential war, continue to watch Australia burn and for political junkies like me, waiting for those next steps in the impeachment saga.
We have had to endure a senseless tradegy, and say good-bye to Neil Peart, one of the greatest drummers of all time. Lets hope 2020 will not be a repeat of 2016 when we lost so many iconic musicians.
In other, albeit, less significant developments, I dove back into the inkwell. I have long had the fortunate ability to write for a number of publications. And while I’ve continued to write, the majority of my work over the last few years has been for commercial clients.
Towards the end of 2019 the itch to write editorial work was getting louder and louder. After a bit of digging I found Medium. If you’re not familiar with them, they are an online platform for writers and publishers that is free of advertising. In short order I created my account and have started writing and publishing articles there.
Those, along with this weekly digest will, I hope, serve up some interesting reading or at least a little distraction from the daily grind.
New articles for you this week:
Trump's Unexpected Consequences
When President Trump ordered the attack on Qasem Soleimani, he likely never considered the possiblity of 176 innocent civilians being killed - and in that, is where the problems begin.
Boris Johnson has a mission. Sever the U.K. from the E.U. Johnson is sure the move will be better for the Brit’s despite gloomy predictions and divorce payments.
What 20 years as a photographer has taught me
A camera is a great tool for taking pictures. It is also, I have learned, a great tool for gaining access past previoulsy off limits.
What can the tiny Scandianavian country teach us? A lot it would seem, but only if we are willing to stop and listen.
Weekly Photo Feature
I have more than 10,000 images in my stock archive. Almost all of them are available for license through Alamy and Getty Images
Each week I’ll pull one of my images and showcase it here. This week;
Kite Surfing in Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada.
Port Stanley, Canada - September 2017. A local kite-surfer makes waves on Lake Erie on a particularly windy day.
From my home in Southwestern Ontario, I am a 45 minute drive to Lake Erie, an hour away from Lake Huron. Going the other ways, 90 minutes to Toronto and two hours to Detroit Michigan. So, there is always something interesting to shoot.
In addition, I like to travel. In 2019 I made two trips to England and one to France. This year, we’ll be off to Florida in March and travelling to the east coast of Canada in our Airstream. We are already planning for 2021 with trips Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
These trips are part vacation, but mostly work. Travel, photography and writing are perfect for each other, like a cold beer on a hot summer day.
I enjoy writing about current affairs, but am also comfortable with feature, business, healthcare and education.
Like my writing, my photography is very editorial focused with a concentration on Canadian places and subjects. I continue to add images to the agencies listed above on a regular basis. As my work evoles to the point where I can write and shoot from any where in the world, I’ll be doing just that.
Till next week,
Cheers, Mark.
